Time to Act on Bigotry

After obtaining statistics which show that there were 252 convictions across Scotland for sectarian behaviour during 2007/08 – a shocking 129 of which occurred in Glasgow – I am calling for anyone convicted of sectarian offences in Scotland to be put through a proper rehab programme to tackle their bigoted behaviour.

A customised rehabilitation programme has been developed and piloted successfully at Polmont YOI and I am urging the Minister for Community Safety, Fergus Ewing, to think again over his decision NOT to roll out the package across the rest of the justice system.

These statistics provide a stark indication of the work still to be done in order to rid Scotland of Sectarianism.

While the figures for Glasgow are shocking enough it must also be acknowledged that there have been convictions right across the country.

It is imperative that when individuals are convicted of bigoted behaviour they are put through a rigorous rehab programme in order to ensure that they do not re-offend and continue to peddle religious hatred.

I raised these concerns with the Minister last week and while disappointed that he would not then commit to such a necessary intervention.  I hope that these damning statistics will now force the Scottish Government to act.
