Compensation bill fight goes on

I am appalled that my proposal to get fairer compensation for victims of accidents and diseases has been needlessly delayed by non-Labour members of the Justice Committee.

The proposal which will assist victims of accidents and disease, including victims of workplace accidents, to get fair compensation now has to undergo another consultation despite an earlier probe by the Scottish Law Commission.

I am astonished that the SNP, Tory and Lib Dem members of the committee opted to kick this bill into the long grass. Nothing has changed since the Scottish Law Commission consultation and this delay really is both intolerable, and unjustified.

Many of the people that the bill is designed to help may not have five months more to wait for a change in the law.

I am convinced the bill proposal will make a positive difference to people’s lives and, despite this setback, I am determined to continue the fight to enshrine it in legislation.
