Hello and welcome to my blog.
I was born in Glasgow in 1956, and have lived in the city for most of my life. From 1980 to 2000 I worked as a teacher of English, latterly at Stonelaw High School in Rutherglen. I am married to Patricia Ferguson, MSP for Glasgow Maryhill.
I served as a councillor in Glasgow from 1987-2001. From 1997-2000, I was Secretary of the Labour Group and Vice-convener of the Policy and Resources Committee.
I was elected as the MSP for Glasgow Anniesland at the by-election held on 23rd November 2000. I have served on the Enterprise, Health, Standards and Subordinate Legislation Committees of the Scottish Parliament. I was re-elected as the Labour and Co-operative Party MSP for Glasgow Anniesland on May 3rd 2007. I am the Deputy Convener of the Justice Committee and also chair the Cross Party Group on Glasgow Crossrail.
Involved in the Labour Party for over 30 years, I have held a variety of branch and constituency posts, including 5 years as Chair of Glasgow Garscadden CLP. I served on the National Policy Forum from 1995-2000. I have been Vice-Convener of the SPLP since 2003.
I am an active trade unionist. I have been a member of the EIS since 1980, and served as an EIS representative while in Bridgeton. In 1993 I joined the GMB union and have supported a number of the Union’s campaigns.
I joined the Co-operative Party in 1993 and have served as the Convener of the Co-op Group of MSPs. I have spoken at a number of Co-op Party Conferences and have promoted the benefits of co-operation both inside and outside of the parliament.
My interests include reading, film, theatre and supporting Partick Thistle FC.
I do hope you enjoy reading my blog.
Best wishes,

Bill Butler MSP
Glasgow Anniesland
